about

In 1993, Celtic musician Julia Lane, her husband Fred Gosbee and their children were visiting the west of Ireland. They enjoyed the hospitality, the rich heritage and, of course, the music.
During their stay, an event occurred which rocked the family out of their bucolic vacation. An IRA terrorist bomb exploded in a shopping mall on Mother’s Day killing several children who were shopping for gifts for their mothers. Although Lane did not witness the event, she and her family did experience the effect it had on the Irish community. The fact that children had been killed was particularly devastating.
They discovered that, in spite of the outward appearance of hopelessness, there are actually many grassroots organizations working towards peaceful reconciliation and understanding. Many involve getting families and children of different backgrounds and belief systems together for discussion, the sharing of food and music. Lane was moved to write the song “Let the Children Sing”.
While this song was originally written for the children of Ireland it is now dedicated to children anywhere where conflict forces them to grow up too fast.
lyrics
Let the children sing, let the children sing
A song that their parents never knew
A song about living,
Loving and forgiving
Making all the dreams of the world come true
Let the children play, let the children play
In the place where their parents fired guns
For the anguish of a nation
Brought down through generations
Can only be healed when the fighting is done
Let the children sleep, let the children sleep
And grow in the peace of a fruitful land Where anger and fear
Have all disappeared
With all of the people in God’s loving hand
All of the people in God’s loving hand

Jud is the best Maine songwriter in a generation. This is not naval-gazing stuff, but fresh looks at ordinary things. Bonus: He's a great singer and guitarist as well. Castlebay
